Pomnik Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu

Pomnik Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu, autorstwa Christiana Friedricha Tiecka, odsłonięty został w 1853 roku na Rynku Staromiejskim, blisko ratusza. W XIX wieku inicjatywa jego budowy kilkukrotnie upadała – m.in. po nieudanym projekcie z 1765 roku oraz przerwaniu zbiórek na pomnik w okresie Księstwa Warszawskiego. Dopiero w 1839 roku powstało niemieckie stowarzyszenie, które podjęło ostateczne działania, by uhonorować toruńskiego astronoma.

Pomnik przedstawia Kopernika w profesorskiej todze, trzymającego w lewej dłoni sferę armilarną, a prawą wskazującego niebo, symbolizując jego odkrycia w dziedzinie astronomii. Na cokole wyryto łacińską inskrypcję: "Mikołaj Kopernik Toruńczyk, Ruszył Ziemię, wstrzymał Słońce i Niebo", autorstwa Rudolfa Brohma. W 2003 roku pomnik przeszedł renowację, przywrócono mu studzienkę z brązowym delfinem oraz odnowiono kamienne ławki wokół podstawy.
