Bazylika Mariacka

Bazylika Mariacka w Krakowie to kościół rzymskokatolicki, usytuowany na placu Mariackim, w sercu Starego Miasta. Jest to gotycka bazylika trójnawowa, która od 1962 roku posiada tytuł bazyliki mniejszej.

Historia tego kościoła sięga XIII i XIV wieku, kiedy to na miejscu wcześniejszej drewnianej świątyni wzniesiono pierwszy murowany kościół w stylu romańskim. Jednak został on zniszczony podczas najazdów tatarskich. W latach 1290–1300 wybudowano wczesnogotycką halę kościelną, a później dobudowano prezbiterium i przystosowano kościół do układu bazylikowego.

W XV wieku kościół zyskał sławę dzięki arcydziełu rzeźbiarskiemu - Ołtarzowi Wielkiemu autorstwa Wita Stwosza. W kolejnych wiekach świątynia przeszła wiele zmian i modernizacji, w tym przebudowę w stylu późnego baroku i neogotyku.

W 2010 roku odbyła się w kościele Mariackim uroczystość pogrzebowa prezydenta Lecha Kaczyńskiego i jego żony Marii, których trumny złożono w jednej z krypt katedry na Wawelu.
